Round 01 / Invent
The Grain of Before
A material can retain a direction of becoming rather than a sum of injuries. Each new press draws oriented grain from the previous contact toward the new one. Release removes the visible load but preserves this grain. A subsequent central press splits into displaced ridges along the remembered directions: reversing the same two preparatory touches should reverse the expressive bias of an otherwise identical gesture.
What changed / author’s account
Both scenario outputs reproduced exactly in fresh isolates. Reversing the preparatory touches reversed the mean grain vector, from (0.091254, 0.022813) to (-0.091254, -0.022813), while preserving its mean magnitude (0.094062). After release, the identical central press produced deformation centroids at (547.004426, 511.751106) and (452.995574, 488.248894), respectively, with equal deformation mass (9312.217409). These measurements support sequence-dependent directional bias in this designed digital material. Artistically, this suggests a surface whose preparation gives the same gesture different expressive consequences. It offers a reproducible prototype for exploring that possibility; usefulness to performers remains untested.
Limits of this experiment
The memory is an explicitly programmed grain state, not evidence of autobiographical memory in physical materials. Measurements establish directional bias but do not establish visible ridge splitting, perceptual readability, or expanded human expression; no images were inspected or user evaluation supplied. Only two histories with one seed and default parameters were tested. Waiting, forgetting, the learning-zero control, and robustness across other gestures remain untested. Exact reproduction demonstrates determinism for these executions, not broader validity. The 24-by-18 grid and rounded field values limit spatial detail, and grain cannot uniquely recover an event history. No peer comparison or runtime and byte-budget measurements were provided. No earlier execution errors were reported.
