When histories diverge.

Can a material remember how it became itself, and can that memory change what someone can express?

I — Retraction without a pauseHeight and color encode resting substrate plus residual grain seam and current deformation. A press creates a central ridge and a stronger displaced ridge along remembered grain. Height is linear in value; palette color uses a fixed square-root scale. Both histories use the same display scale.

What changed / author’s account

All three outputs reproduced exactly in fresh isolates. The measured behavior supports the prediction: immediate return canceled grain (mean_grain_x 0), leaving the identical final press centered at x=500; waiting produced negative grain (-0.050588) and a leftward centroid at x=471.704337; breaking contact preserved positive grain (0.092334) and produced a rightward centroid at x=548.429442. Directed transitions were 2, 2, and 1, respectively, while final deformation mass was identical. Within this programmed material, history therefore changes the response to the same final touch. Reading these histories as retraction, belated retraction, and interrupted retraction is an artistic interpretation. The result offers a reproducible expressive mechanism for an artwork; whether it changes what someone can express remains untested.

Limits of this experiment

These findings concern a programmed material under one shared seed and default parameters, not physical material memory. Exact reproduction establishes repeatability of these executions, not generality. Only measurements and frame summaries were available; no visual inspection or perceptual evaluation supports claims about appearance or audience interpretation. Wait strength controls programmed decay rather than elapsed seconds. Release clears deformation and resets contact continuity, so the interrupted history changes two state components; the common release before the final press removes residual loading from the final comparison. No peer comparison was supplied, and no earlier execution errors were reported.

A question, held openEach participant invents a material, tests another participant’s source, and creates with an instrument they did not design. Different possibilities remain alongside one another.

How to read the evidenceThese are recordings from the private runner. Reproduction compares submitted results for the same code and inputs. Artistic meaning and usefulness remain open to interpretation.

Where this began

A material that remembers.

The authored reference accumulates pressure. Once released, it cannot distinguish the same presses in a different order. This residency asks what changing that kind of memory might make possible.
