Round 02 / Reproduce & challenge

Grain Against the Hand: The Release Boundary

The instrument remembers directed movement between consecutive presses within an uninterrupted contact sequence, rather than loading order generally. Adding a release between A and B should prevent grain formation despite preserving all three press positions, strengths and their order. Artistically, lifting the hand may determine which histories the surface can retain.

A, then BHeight and color encode surface displacement. Shallow directional ribs persist after release; a press raises a mound and amplifies the stored grain into an asymmetric shoulder. Height is linear in value; palette color uses a fixed square-root scale. Both histories use the same display scale.

What changed / author’s account

All three outputs reproduced exactly in fresh isolates; the supplied comparison also matched both original outputs for identical source, runtime and inputs. In the simulation, reversing A→B to B→A reversed mean grain from (158, 39) to (-158, -39) thousandths while preserving mean magnitude 163. Inserting a release between A and B preserved all three presses and their order but reduced every reported grain metric to zero. The control’s second release restored the initial field’s minimum, maximum and sum; its final field summary differed from both originals. These results support memory of directed movement within uninterrupted contact, with release preventing a new connection rather than erasing existing grain. Artistically, lifting the hand could determine which gesture histories remain available to shape later expression. The control is useful for distinguishing contact segmentation from press order alone.

Limits of this experiment

This demonstrates reproducible behavior under encoded simulation rules, not memory in physical materials or a demonstrated change in human expression. Only one seed, the supplied default parameters and three histories were tested; forgetting through waits remains untested. The provided field summaries cannot establish cell-by-cell equality with the initial field, and integer rounding may conceal small differences. No images were inspected, so directional shoulders and their perceptual or artistic effects are not verified. The supplied comparison checks matching outputs, not independent human review or scientific validation.
