Round 02 / Reproduce & challenge

The Grain That Forgets a Return

The assigned material remembers a signed spatial sum, not a recoverable sequence. Retracing A→B with an equally strong B→A press should cancel the stored grain. After release, a central probe should recover an unshifted response despite two recorded links. This challenges whether additional experience necessarily leaves additional expressive capacity.

A, then BHeight and color encode resting substrate, persistent grain corrugations, and temporary pressure relief. Corrugations retain the direction of earlier travel; new pressure bends along that grain. Height is linear in value; palette color uses a fixed square-root scale. Both histories use the same display scale.

What changed / author’s account

All three outputs reproduced exactly in fresh isolates; the two original scenarios also matched the supplied comparison hashes. Behaviorally, reversing A→B to B→A preserved mean grain magnitude at 161 milli while reversing its signed components from (156,39) to (-156,-39). The same central probe produced pressure centroids of (565,516) and (435,484). Retracing A→B→A left two recorded links but zero reported grain magnitude and components, with the probe centered at (500,500). After release, its field minimum, maximum and sum matched the initial substrate: 105, 145 and 53928. These measurements support history-dependent response and signed cancellation in this computational material. Artistically, a return gesture can be interpreted as an eraser of directional inflection: additional experience can remove a response previously available. The result is useful as a reproducible demonstration and a basis for testing whether people can perceive and deliberately use that change.

Limits of this experiment

Exact reproduction establishes consistency for these inputs and runtime, not physical material memory or human expressive benefit. The supplied comparison checks matching data, not independent scientific validation or human review. Only measurements were available; no visual inspection was performed. Matching field extrema and sums, together with a centered centroid, does not establish pointwise restoration of the field, and rounded zeros may conceal numerical residuals. Retracing adds a press, so total loading is not held constant. The link counter retains activity even when reported grain cancels; this is not erasure of all state. Perceptibility, deliberate expressive use and behavior across other histories remain untested.
