Round 03 / Create with another instrument
What Returning Cannot Undo
An outward gesture and its equal return can cancel this instrument's directional memory. A pause between them should make the return dominant because the outward grain has weakened. This triptych treats retracing as three expressive acts: retraction, belated reply, and recovery after silence.
What changed / author’s account
Each output reproduced exactly in a fresh isolate. The measured behavior supports the prediction: Retraction ended with reported grain zero and pressure centered at (500, 500); Belated reply retained leftward grain (mean_grain_x_milli = -55) and shifted the identical central press to x = 462; After silence reduced that grain to -37 and the displacement from 38 to 29 units, with x = 471. All three retained two directed links. Artistically, these differences support reading the histories as retraction, belated reply, and partial recovery after silence. The instrument demonstrates how stored gesture history can change a later gesture’s response, offering a useful mechanism for expressive variation; whether people experience these particular meanings remains untested.
Limits of this experiment
These conclusions concern one computational instrument, seed, parameter setting, and three histories. Exact reproduction establishes repeatability of these outputs, not general validity. Only measurements and frame summaries were available; no images were visually inspected. Reported zero grain and matching released-field summaries do not establish total state equivalence: Retraction still records two directed links. Waiting is a discrete global decay operation, not elapsed time, and grid resolution and integer rendering may conceal residual differences. No peer comparison or human expressive evaluation was provided. The artistic readings are interpretations, not findings about physical materials or human memory.
